The Severity of Environmental Contamination Caused by Organic Contaminants

Organic Contaminants Testing

Organic contaminants refer to contaminants composed of natural organic substances in the form of carbohydrates, proteins, amino acids, and fats and some other biodegradable synthetic organic substances. Among organic contaminants, persistent organic pollutants (POPs) with high toxicity, persistence, bioaccumulation, and long-distance migration can seriously damage the ecological environment and endanger human health. As a typical environmental pollutant, POPs can cause teratogenic, carcinogenic and mutagenicity. As early as the 1940s, dioxins, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), organochlorine pesticides (OCP), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) pollutes the environment, but until now, these organic pollutants can still be frequently detected in different water bodies.

The Application of ELISA Kits in Organic Contaminants Testing

Organic Contaminants Testing

Organic contaminants can spread along the food chain and accumulate in fat in animals, which can cause allergies, birth defects, cancer, damage to the immune system and reproductive organs, etc. Even if their concentration is extremely small, they will affect the human endocrine system. In May 2001, the Stockholm Convention signed by 90 countries banned or restricted the use of 12 types of persistent organic pollutants, which belong to organochlorine pesticides, PCBs and dioxins. However, these contaminants have been present in the soil and water for a long time, and they have spread all over the world. For such harmful contaminants, long-term monitoring is still needed. Given ELISA has the advantages of fast speed, simple operation, strong specificity, etc., it has long been used to detect organic contaminants in environmental samples.

ELISA Types

Direct ELISA、Indirect ELISA、Direct Competitive ELISA、Sandwich ELISA

The Advantages of ELISA Testing

  • Can specifically detect organic contaminants
  • Can detect organic contaminants quickly and with high throughput
  • Simple operation and low cost for detecting organic contaminants

Sample Preparation

Soil samples need to use chloroform, petroleum ether, alcohols, acetone, benzene and other organic solvents to extract, dry, homogenize, sieving or ultrasonically extract the samples to be tested. Liquid samples need to be processed such as separation, dialysis, freeze-drying to constant weight, and dissolution. The processed samples are stored at -80°C.

The Common Organic Contaminants Testing

Dioxins

Dioxins, a by-product produced by industrial production and waste incineration, have been distributed globally, which seriously endangers the environment and biodiversity. It is the most terrifying chemical substance created by mankind at present, and it is called "the most toxic poison on earth".

Polycyclic Aromatic
Hydrocarbons

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which belong to persistent organic pollutants, are widely present in the environment, are genetically toxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic, and are the first type of compounds that have been proven to have carcinogenic effects through animal experiments.

Polychlorinated
Biphenyls

Polychlorinated biphenyls have been banned in most countries, but because they accumulate in the environment and are not easily degraded, they are still polluting the environment. Moreover, its strong toxicity, teratogenicity and carcinogenicity, pose a serious threat to human health.
