Legionella Urinary Antigen Testing Services

Microscopic view of legionella bacteria

Legionella, particularly Legionella pneumophila, is a Gram-negative pathogen widely found in natural freshwater and artificial water systems (such as cooling towers and air conditioning systems). Inhalation of aerosols containing these bacteria can cause a severe atypical pneumonia known as Legionnaires' disease.

In biomedical and infectious disease research, traditional bacterial culture methods are extremely time-consuming (often taking days to weeks) and have strict sample requirements. In contrast, the Urinary Antigen Test (UAT) is a highly efficient analytical tool of immense research value. After the pathogen infects the host, specific soluble antigens from the Legionella cell wall (primarily lipopolysaccharide components) are released into the bloodstream, concentrated by the kidneys, and excreted in the urine. By detecting specific antigens in urine samples, researchers can quickly obtain etiological evidence in the very early stages of infection. This is of decisive significance for building animal infection models, evaluating early intervention strategies, and retrospectively tracing epidemiological chains.

Our Services

Relying on our mature immunological testing platforms, we provide standardized Legionella urinary antigen testing services for research teams and biopharmaceutical companies. Our assays primarily target the specific soluble antigens of the highly pathogenic Legionella pneumophila Serogroup 1, which is the most common strain found in both clinical and environmental settings.

Our Advantages

  • Non-Invasive & High-Tolerance Sample Management: Urine collection induces minimal stress on experimental subjects. The excellent room temperature stability (24 hours) significantly reduces the pressure of maintaining cold-chain storage at the sampling site.
  • High-Specificity Antigen Capture: Utilizing rigorously validated research-grade monoclonal antibodies, we precisely target the core antigenic epitopes of Legionella pneumophila, effectively preventing cross-reactivity with other respiratory pathogens.
  • Rapid Research Data Turnaround: Breaking through the turnaround bottlenecks of traditional culture methods, our high-throughput Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) or rapid immunochromatography platforms can deliver large batches of analytical data in an extremely short timeframe.

Sample Requirements

Urine samples are non-invasive and easy to collect, making them exceptionally well-suited for large-scale cohort research screening. To ensure the precise capture of immunological signals, please strictly adhere to the following guidelines when preparing samples:

  • Sample Type: Urine. No preservatives required.
  • Preferred Volume: We recommend submitting 1.0 mL of urine to accommodate retesting and sample retention for quality control.
  • Minimum Volume: For special micro-experimental models, the absolute minimum acceptable volume for this test is 0.5 mL.
  • Specimen Stability: Legionella urinary antigens possess exceptionally high in vitro biochemical stability, perfectly accommodating field sampling and long-distance logistics:
    • Room Temperature: Stable for 24 hours.
    • Refrigerated (2-8°C): Stable for 14 days.
    • Frozen (-20°C or below): Stable for 30 days.
